The East London sludge incinerator plants at Crossness and Beckton, for Thames Water Limited, are exemplar design within the industry.  These buildings have had a far reaching impact; locally it has an iconic presence and internationally both as a design and sustainability standard.

With recognition as a Civic Trust Award Winner in 2000 the incinerators manage 25% of London’s sludge and the recovered heat is used to generate electrical energy at the two sites.

Incineration was selected as the disposal route to fit in with the EEC directive which terminated sea disposal operations by 1998.  The plants have a combined capacity to process approximately 373,000 tonnes of dewatered sludge per year, using fluidised bed combustion technology. The two plants contains two incinerator lines in total and produces an energy output of 5.5MW.

A sophisticated gas cleaning system controls emissions to a level compliant with the most rigorous European standards providing an environmentally acceptable scheme generating ‘green’ energy.

In conjunction with Lurgi, our technology partner, we carried out full multidisciplinary design and procurement for civil work, structural steel work, turbines and ancillary plant equipment.
