Ground Engineering Awards Finalist 2011
13th May 2011
The award winning temporary River Derwent crossing project, designed and coordinated by our Engineering Services team, was recognised as a finalist in the Geotechnical or Geoenvironmental UK project up to £1m category at the 2011 Ground Engineering Awards dinner held on Wednesday 11 May.
Following the devastation caused by the floods across Cumbria in November 2009 our Engineering services team was engaged to reunite the community of Workington with a temporary crossing over the River Derwent. With just 10 weeks to procure, design and construct the bridge team work was essential.
A truly integrated team approach was adopted with the Council, designers and contractors, this sped up the communication and decision making process to achieve the 10 week programme period.
Site surveys and investigations provided key information to the ground conditions and risks along with the environmental impact of the construction works on the surrounding community. Our designs were progressed to reduce the risk and interruption posed by the works and took advantage of products available to accelerate the construction programme to the delight of the Council and community.
“The Ground Engineering award accolade recognises the high calibre of our design in achieving harmony with the local community and ground conditions. The team’s commitment to collaborative working and total customer satisfaction was key to the overall success of the project within the timescale and budget.”
Although temporary, the new bridge and supporting road network carries two way traffic and pedestrians and is likely to remain in place for some years to come. The project was constructed in the full glare of national media attention and so inevitably required high levels of programme and technical certainty. The result brought great credit to the construction industry in general and the whole team in particular.
About the awards: The Ground Engineering Awards annually recognise the innovation, best practice and inspiration throughout the geotechnical and geoenvironmental industries.
More about the project: The River Derwent Temporary Bridge was the winner of the BCIA Best Small Engineering project in 2010
