“Commended” in APS Project of the Year
25th October 2010
Construction professional Joan Thomson has been commended for her work on an East Dunbartonshire schools scheme.
CDM (construction design management) co-ordinator Joan was shortlisted for the Association for Project Safety’s Project of the Year award.
The national award, open to entries from across the construction and engineering industry and held for the first time this year, showcases excellence in design and construction health and safety risk management. The award ceremony was held at the APS Annual Convention Dinner in Manchester.
Joan was recognised for her work on a major design and build modernisation programme for six East Dunbartonshire secondary schools. Building work on the programme finished in May 2010.
The judging panel praised Joan’s approach, including the consideration of hazard reduction through design options.
“Involving all key stakeholders at an early stage helped the design team identify the significant issues relating to each school site and provide successful solutions,” says Joan. “Our approach ensured that the external design team became an integral part of the process, with members of the team attending Morgan Sindall Professional Services’ own cultural safety programme focusing on safety of design during construction.”
“An excellent system was in place for monitoring risks and communicating to all involved. Ease and safety in maintenance was clearly considered in the designs. Prefabrication of services reduced hazards but also reduced potential waste and there was evidence of good practice in site waste management”
