Engineering services team winners of the "Small Engineering Project of the Year" 2010

Our Engineering Services team in the Warrington office were part of the team awarded the British Construction Industry Award for “Best small engineering project of the year” 2010 for their work on delivering a temporary river crossing at Workington. A fast track project which reunited a town devastated by November 2009 floods in Cumbria. The loss of the river Derwent crossing at Workington caused severe local difficulty with the community severed and alternative routes unavailable.

What makes this project special is the extraordinary speed with which the solution was envisaged, the design developed, land acquired and project delivered

BCIA Award Judges,

We responded to the emergency procurement of a new temporary bridge and reinstated the crossing in just 10 weeks. Morgan Sindall Professional Services team worked closely with the onsite team and provided civil and structural, temporary works and construction management skills to accelerate delivery of the crossing.

Although temporary, the new bridge and associated road network carries two way traffic and pedestrians and is likely to remain in place for some years to come. The project was constructed in the full glare of national media attention and so inevitably required high levels of programme and technical certainty. The result brought great credit to the construction industry in general and the whole team in particular.
